Tennessee's Watchable Wildlife web site
We are proud to formally announce the launch of the new website of Tennessee’s Watchable Wildlife, www.tnwatchablewildlife.org. The website has information on the birds found in Tennessee that can be easily searched by a bird’s habitat, color, use of backyards and feeders, or taxonomic group. Each species has a profile where you can find out about the occurrence of the bird in the state, see pictures, hear songs and calls, and find places to see it. Descriptions of more than 170 places to watch wildlife in Tennessee have been developed with information about habitat, wildlife to observe, detailed directions and interactive maps, and more.    more

Governor's Environmental Stewardship Awards
“The continued health of our communities is tantamount to the quality and safety of our environment, affecting our lives from the air we breathe to the health of our state’s streams and rivers,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “Recognizing those committed to protecting and preserving Tennessee is a worthwhile effort, not only to honor these individuals and organizations for their outstanding work but to encourage others to follow their example.”

The Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards cover 13 categories: Agriculture/Forestry; Aquatic Resource Preservation; Building Green; Energy Leadership; Environmental Education and Outreach; Green Schools; Greenways and Trails; Hazardous Waste Reduction; Solid Waste Reduction; Lifetime Achievement; Natural Heritage Conservation; Parks and Recreation; and Pollution Prevention.

Any individual, business, organization, educational institution or agency is eligible, provided it is located in Tennessee and its projects were completed during the 2009 calendar year. Nominees must have a minimum of three years of environmental compliance with the Department of Environment and Conservation to be eligible for consideration. Self-nominations are encouraged.

A panel of judges representing agricultural, conservation, forestry, environmental and academic professionals will select award recipients based on criteria including on-the-ground achievement, innovation and public education. The deadline for nominations is March 31, 2010. Award recipients will be announced in May 2010.

For more information about each category, judging criteria and nomination forms, visit the Web site at www.tn.gov/environment/awards.

During this hands-on session, participants will be in search of rocks, minerals and fossils. A variety of scientific tests will be conducted to help you determine which specimen you may have found on your hunt and possibly find fossils.

Weather—Now it’s your turn to predict the weather….In this hands-on session, you will use various meteorological instruments and interpret data to help you forecast the weather. Participants will also discuss how weather has changed our earth.
